Looking for modern alternative to traditional Christmas tree? Here you go - hygge Christmas tree from plywood. Simple and not expensive and easy to store and you will not be bothered about dropped needles that are catered all over the house from real Christmas tree.

This tutorial is for a 62 cm tall and 50 cm width Christmas tree. You can make any dimensions desired.
I decorated this tree with scented Christmas tree ornaments from MiLiCrafts.

MATERIALS:

TOOLS:

• Ruler
• Pencil
• Hand saw or jig saw
• Drill with 8 mm drill bit
• Sanding paper  (150 grit)

STEPS 1. Draw the cutting lines. 

Draw the horizontal line in the middle of the sheet. Measure 55 cm from the top and draw the horizontal line. Draw the side lines.

Draw the 7 x 20 cm tree stem. Draw two more 7 x 20 cm rectangles (it will be the support parts). You have a cutting lines (just eliminate the vertical center line).

2. Cut out all the elements.

3. Measure and draw the cutting lines for support parts. 

In the middle of stem parts draw the cutting lines for the slots. In the tree stem center draw 0.8 cm width line which has to be 7 cm tall. In the middle of support stem parts draw 3.5 cm lines (the cutting line is 0.4 cm width). Cut out the joining slots. Try to join the tree and see if it joins smoothly.

4. Sand all the edges of the cut out.

5. Mark and drill the holes for dowel pins. 

Measure and mark the drilling points. Drill the holes. Sand the cut out holes. Put in the pins.

6. Assemble and enjoy your Christmas tree.

Felt making is considered to be one of the oldest textile techniques. Here is used wet felting which involves only warm water, natural soap and a few simple wooden and ceramic tools. It takes time to felt a pair of slippers, and it is a rather complicated process. To get a nice shape, it is necessary to possess shoe lasts and also sharp eyes. In the beginning, wool is precisely weighed in accordance with a special table of weight, as different sizes require different amount of wool. Jurga usually uses undyed natural wool, but she likes some decorative elements of dyed wool too. She is using different moulds for different sizes. First of all, she line dry wool and apply water to the fabric. A pair of slippers is lined together. When the wool is lined and wet, it is time to start felting. Slippers are twisted into a towel and then rolling many times. Afterwards, Jurga's husband takes the slippers into his hands to give them a nice shape, to rinse in clean water and dry them next to the fireplace. Felting is a long process which takes time and requires physical strength of a felter. In the different point of view, it is such a pleasure to work with natural fibres, natural wool which comes from animal-friendly farms. Jurga usually use European wool, and are very concerned about the issue of ecology.

Each little piece first created in head, then drafted on paper and finally made by hands using lots of love and skills, such as pyrography, carving wood, engraving stone, leather working, flint knapping and more.

Almost 4 years ago I became a part of the magical world of art dolls. My journey began in Vilnius art academy where I studied set design and puppet theatre. While studying was a great adventure, in real life after a few plays as a set designer, I knew that this path is not for me so I plunged myself into interior dolls. At that time I couldn’t imagine how my life will change after this decision. And here I am, talking to you as a full time artist, who’s building her career from ground up. I guess anything is possible, huh?

My dolls are more than just a decoration, because everyone of them have a story to tell. I bring a unique tale in a little creature. Every costume, every lock of hair, every tiny detail is telling you how special and exclusive this art doll is. I love the feeling when the doll is completed, wrapped up with a ribbon and a hand written story. It’s like another page added to my creation journey. I hope that you can see and feel the same passion, joy and love for life in my dolls like I do.

Since I was little girl I loved handicrafts, because my grandmother and grandfather were very handy people. They taught me different techniques of creating beautiful things. My grandmother showed me how to knit, sew, crochet and lots of other different things. My grandfather loves working with wood, so had an opportunity to learn from him. All of their life they learn new things and taught me and others. 

As a child I spend all of my summers at the country side where I learn to love nature and use gifts of it for my handicrafts. I liked playing with wood branches, reed canes and grass stems.
As an adult I searched myself for a long time where I belong, what should I be and what should I work. And one day I decided that I want to develop the knowledge and skills given me by my grandparents and open my handicraft shop on Etsy. From that day I make hand-crafted items filled with love and inspired by nature.

Our story unfolds far away from urban noise, crowded areas and active city life. It takes its start in calm and boundless fields somewhere in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa where finest wool merino sheep graze.

My first creation was a linen teddy bear after welcoming my daughter. Teddy after teddy it slowly developed to a small business of mine.

Now I have a son as well and more products that I make. I can offer warm and cosy knitted extra fine merino wool baby blankets and matching knitted woolen socks. Also I make not only soft Teddy bears, but rag dolls and bunnies as well. 

Everything I make is first and foremost dedicated to my kids. I make things that are warm, useful and especially designed according to needs of children. Items from my shop will be perfect gifts for all occasions from newborns to toddles, such as baby shower, Christening, Christmas and birthdays.
